Florida Orienteering
Special Arrangements During 2020's COVID-19 National Shutdown.

Welcome to our attempt to keep you active and outdoors during these trying times.

We have set up three semi-permanent courses at Little Big Econ.

Instead of the official international control flags we usually use, we instead have placed 1" wide pink ribbons as substitutes for Control Markers. Most ribbons are 12" to 18" in length. Each ribbon will have three items written on it:

  1. The letters "FLO"
  2. The "Control Number" from the Control Description Sheets
  3. A Single Letter
You may find other pink ribbons that do not have these markings. Please ignore these.

Participants will need to write down the Single Letter found at each control location on their course as proof-of-find.
Participants should also record their elapsed time from Start to Finish, both of which are to be at the Info Kiosk at the Barr Street Parking Corral. (Geneva Drive, Route 426, 3 miles NE of Oviedo, FL, Coordinates 28.6865N, 81.1603W)

Notes and Instructions:

This is entirely on the Honor System; maps, competition and donations.

There will not be any on-site event management while you are running the course.

Consult the Permanent Course brochure Instructions for additional guidance and explanation of how orienteering works.

Print the course of your choice on standard 8.5x11 paper. See instructions below.

Visit the controls in order, as numbered on the printed map.

Remember to take with you a means of recording the Single Letter Codes on each ribbon. You can do this either with a pen, a marker, or a cell phone photo.

Be sure to carry water and a whistle!! Be sure to wear shin protection; Blackberry bushes are commonly about shin high.

If you are competing alone, let someone know where you are going, and how long you plan to be out there. We also suggest that you leave a copy of the map in your car, or with a friend, in case someone needs to come out to find/help you.

If you take more than 3 hours on any course: RETIRE! The summer Florida heat can be brutal and heat exhaustion can sneak up on you. Carry a CHARGED cell phone for safety.

After you complete the course you can email your name, the course name (Short, Long, Longest), your list of control codes and your elapsed time, to results@floridaorienteering.org.

By printing the map for any of these courses you are agreeing to the following Waiver of Liability:

As a condition for participating in this orienteering event, you hereby release Florida Orienteering, also known as FLO, and each of its officers and member and others who have planned or participated in this event from liability for any personal injury or property damage that may occur to you or any member of your group as a result of your participation at this event whether caused by negligence or otherwise, and you hereby indemnify Florida Orienteering (FLO), its officers and any organizations or authorities sponsoring the event from any liability for injury or damage or expense caused by yourself or other members of your group.
