UCF Score-O Results

The weather held for the UCF Score-O (February 22) and provided us pleasant gusts of winds and mid 80’s temperatures. The venue was a Score-O with 45 !!! controls to choose from. I estimated that it would take about 2 ½ hours to visit every control, and one competitor (Matt Mahoney tried but ended up losing his card and returning). One control was repeated (ON was at two locations) and yes it was intentional. A thanks goes to Janet Putnam and Linda Eaglin for handling registration, Bob Putnam for providing map instruction and the UCF Army ROTC’s for handling start and finish, flag setting and flag retrieval. Maps were pre-marked making things a little easier than usual. The map was drawn by Bob and Ron and was completed 3 days before the event (well almost completed - its never really finished).

White Course (55 total competitors) - The white was a subset of the Score-O. It was a 2.4 km course which was accessible via stroller (with a couple of spots carrying it over logs).

Score-O (total 28 teams or individuals): The 90 minute time limit on score-O was much more popular than the previous 60 minute time limit. It was short enough competitors weren’t exhausted, however they had enough time to visit a lot of controls. The 5 point bonus for collecting a bag of trash (the bags were donated by Publix) was a good incentive as almost every competitor collected a bagful. Flags were arranged with 1, 3, and 5 point values assigned to them. The 5 pointers were obviously the most difficult to reach. Matt Mahoney might have won if he hadn’t lost his card (Oh well.) As it stood the results were very tight and Kate Putnam edged out the other competitors. Sherry Savrda collected 66 points which would have won the event had she not exceeded the time limit by about 30 minutes. Boca JROTC took an interesting approach, splitting into 3 groups and sending each groups to different flags. What they didn’t count on was getting a single score card to each flag. The results have the m split into groups A,B, and C. Added together their score totals 85. Even with 45 controls, every control was visited at least once by some competitor.
