Where to begin?
So here's my story (Bev and Dave will have their own story with the results):
When I drove in about 9:40 am the place looked as though it was already a record crowd and I could see more cars behind me driving in. The registration table was absolutely buried behind a sea of people. Both Ron Eaglin and I were busy doing instruction at one point. The start table looked even more crowded and periodically Jay Murphy would emerge from the crowd looking haggard but cheerful. Somehow everyone managed to pull it off without (much) panic.
Lots of JROTC. Lots of Home Schoolers. Lots of Girl Scouts. Whoever is doing the publicity within those groups for us - Keep up the good work. Speaking of publicity - Ron Eaglin (who does Orlando Sentinel) and Ray Bruneau (who does everything else) deserve a special thanks. We have to assume their efforts are bearing fruit when we see big turnouts like this. The Sentinel feature article last month helped. The record turnout at Tibet Butler, two weeks prior to this event, helped. The word of mouth process apparently also helps.
Now I have to call Wekiwa GEOpark to make sure we didn't inadvertently do anything wrong. I'm looking forward to that one perfect day with those folks. It's been a year since we have had no awkward incidents at Wekiwa (RSRSR is part of WBGP).
As for my own Red course run, both Ron Eaglin and Paul Hodges whupped me good, and Blain Reeves was only a minute behind me, unless he read his watch wrong and also beat me. I have lots of excuses, though. They're right here somewhere. Maybe I'll find them later. Anyway, the brain does odd things when you run too fast. Its an old Orienteering saying, but its true: It's called oxygen debt and after you've been running 30 or 40 minutes, you have to guard against doing dumb things. I didn't. Guard, that is. But man, did I have fun. We saw parts of RSRSR we hadn't visited before. B&D took us through some really pretty areas. And the lakes in the south part were so dry the park had bush-hogged them, so we could run right through them and actually navigate via the green island-clusters of bushes, which Malcolm Adams the mapper had very nicely included on the map. All of the comments I heard from folks on other courses were positive. Very gratifying. Janet and I later retrieved Yellow course controls and noted how long it seemed, but also how interesting and varied, too, which explains the good comments. It never hurts to finish up by going through the prettiest stand of live oak in the park, either; good course design there, Ousleys. The Orange course was clearly advertised as long and difficult, but everyone there seemed to enjoy it, too.
When I get the actual headcount I'll verify the 'records' we set - maybe by the next newsletter.
