It was indeed a beautiful day for a run (or walk, stroll, whatever) in the woods at Moss Park/Split Oak on Saturday, with pleasant temperatures and not even too much mud on the causeway! Add to that a freshly updated map and courses originally designed by our Czech mappers (but shortened by Jonathan because they were too long) and you couldn't ask for better orienteering in Central Florida. A reporter from the Orlando Sentinel was present, and several of us spoke with him (I know Janet did.) I did not get the details as to what and where we might get some publicity; if someone reading this knows please pass that information along.
We did have a hitch at the start of the day, as I found Jonathan updating all of his pre-printed maps when I arrived, with the help of some of the JROTC boys. The rangers re-assigned us to Pavillion 6 to accommodate some 200 girl scouts at the larger Pavillion 5 originally reserved for us. This happened to place control #1 on some courses almost within spitting distance of the start table; anyone who failed to find that one definitely flunks Orienteering 101!
I'd like to thank all of our great volunteers. Jonathan pre-printed (and hand-modified) the maps; Ray brought most of the supplies and helped set things up; Ron and Bob placed controls; Janet, Dave, and Ron all pitched in at various times at the registration table, while Donna, Nicci, Jeanne, and Missy traded start/finish duties. Bob and Dave gave instruction to newcomers, of which there were quite a few. The JROTC faction handled their own registration, etc., greatly relieving our own crew. Their cooperation is very much appreciated and enabled us to cater to a large turnout and still make things run fairly smoothly. Finally, Ron, Dave and crew picked up controls, as Jerry and Ray helped with cleanup. Ray also compiled the results for Mike to post on our web site. And all who wanted to run a course got the chance. I hope I haven't missed anyone and apologize if I have.
I spoke with one orienteer from Ohio who found us via the web site. He was delighted with the event, but at the same time dismayed by his rather dismal performance. He found out what we all know: that orienteering in Florida is something different than in those hills of the northeastern part of the country. The utilization of vegetation boundaries and lack of elevation changes really challenged him, but he said he will be back in the fall and hopes he can join us again then.
Our next event is scheduled for Rock Springs Run State Reserve on April 8, so mark your calendars for another great day in the woods.
