What a nice cool day for orienteering! We had over 350 people turn out for this event. Many were there for their first event along with our many regulars, as well. Everyone seemed to enjoy the many different courses that were designed by Bob Putnam (White, Yellow and Red) and Will Pirnasch (Orange & Green) each of whom also placed their respective flagging tapes beforehand at each control site. We even had a few groups come up from Miami to enjoy a day of orienteering.
I would like to thank Greg Owens for spending a good portion of Friday with me setting all the controls in the Split Oak section of Moss Park. Andy Canelos for coming out early Saturday to set all the flags in Moss Park then go on to run a great time on the red course.
Also a big thanks to all the Central Florida Adventure racers who helped out at the event. From Brian Bills, Jim Feudner, Kevin and Sue (Team Go Blue) for handling the start/finish for all the folks that ventured out on the advanced courses in Split Oak, Ron Eaglin and Dave Shuman for retrieving all the controls in Split Oak. Jerry Sirmans did a great job making everyone feel at ease when he provided instructions to all those who needed it. It goes with out saying, for all that know me, I couldn’t have done this without the support of my wife who watched the other girls of our family while my daughter, Briana (the 10 year old blonde) who helped with registration and pick-up of controls in Moss Park. A special thanks also to Jonathan Linforth for printing all the maps for the event and putting the “clue” sheets right onto the maps.
Most of all I would like to thank the Putnam’s, Janet and Bob who really made this event. Janet (who never even got a chance to go out on any course) who sat at the registration table and taught my daughter and I how to do that job and made it look way too easy. Then of course Bob, who I don’t think we all realize how much work he puts in to make this, and many other events, happen. Besides being the first to run the red course (I wanted him to check to make sure we hung the flags correctly – his red course result deserves an asterisk as course setter, but he says he had to relocate two controls) he came back and helped with registration, making new maps (because of all the people we had to make some new maps on the fly), and providing instruction while Jerry was out running the course.
