Florida Orienteering
Kelly Park
November 3,2012

Courses: WHITE | YELLOW | ORANGE | GREEN | RED | NOTES

One of the most perfect days of the year: clear skies, light breeze, high of 82F and with all controls set out the day before, we were ready to go early.

All we needed were the usual 250 people who invariably turn out for the annual Kelly event. Not quite the normal crowd though: maybe 150 or so. We're still tweaking the final count. Check out the photos on the web page by Jerry Sirmans to see how wonderful the forest looked and how 'low' we hung some of those controls among the wiregrass. Jerry's photos of the wiregrass-carpeted pine uplands are fantastic.

Lots of help from Janet Putnam, Ray Bruneau, Frank Kuhn, Kris Mante, Mike and Laura Summerfield, Meg Oliver, Jerry Sirmans, Joe Maliszewski and Jack Cash. Hope I didn't forget anyone. "Thank you" to all the volunteers, especially Laura and Meg, who went start-to-finish at the Start/Finish table.

Apparently everyone likes FLO's new blue T-shirts. We seem to have sold a bunch. Bet we would have sold a bunch more if the JROTC competition had not skipped this event due to lots of schedule conflicts. We missed them and surely hope they will be out in force at the December Lake Louisa event .

As for my course designs at this event, I realized quickly on the day of the event that the White and Yellow courses, having been printed on the 1:15000 scale map, made them very difficult to read. Hard enough to read by an experienced orienteer, but impossible for first timers and novices (and a few experienced!!). Please accept my apology if you were among the 'victims' of that lapse. That should not happen again.

I notice the Orange course results had only a single DNF from among a goodly number of competitors, so that fact is encouraging to the course designer. As for the Red course, I deliberately did not offer both red and blue courses because lately so many runners have clustered onto the blue course that red had become sparsely populated. I think it worked OK, but the course still managed to DQ experienced orienteers and I don't like to see that. Hopefully nothing was wrong with that red course. You can follow it on Jerry's Master Map posted with the event. Red was controls # 51 through# 64 in that order.

I placed a broken, but very nearly whole, "Herty" pot next to control #56 as your History Lesson for the day. Google Turpentining Industry and Herty Pot to learn more.

I trust everyone had as much fun looking for controls as I had setting them, and hope you saw some wildlife, too. Put Lake Louisa on your calendars for December 8th and maybe the 9th as well, if you're up for it.
