This venue is pretty much my trusty standby, since it’s close to my house and I’m often setting special courses out there for visiting orienteers from elsewhere. I love to show off the intricate flood plain and its runnable avenues among patches of wild palmetto. I liked the look of these two courses myself and thought it would be fun for everyone. I did finally have to re-map one general area that has always given us problems, just so I could put a control in there. I hope they liked it.
Once again a pretty small turnout, 18 starters with 15 people attending, but that’s not too surprising for FLO’s first weekday event ever. It’s unfortunate that the time keepers did not record seconds, only minutes, since even with this small field we seem to have had a tie on the Green course. However, Bill Dean’s 50:00 minutes and Nate’s 60:00 minutes were their second runs of the day so Mike Schneiderman earns a proper Gold Medal at 60:00 minutes.
On that red course, Kirsten Hite turned in a fabulous 73:24 to edge out Rich Parker’s 80:00, although we applaud Rich, knowing he’s in the 70+ age category. Great runs for both! And I’m sure we’ll have to apologize to Joe Maliszewski for getting his time wrong, but 120:00 is the best I could decipher from the notes.
Once again, our long distance entry was Rich Parker from San Diego area but he was joined by almost-snow-bird Mike Schneiderman from the Chicago orienteering club.
Thanks to Greg Owens and the Fluegels for pitching in to help on this event and to Jonathan Linforth for his patient help in assisting, yet again, in tutorials for OCAD mapping.
