Florida Orienteering
Mabry Carlton Reserve
February 16, 3013

Courses: Duathlon-20k | Duathlon-10k | Bike Only-20K | Score Only | NOTES

February 16th was another beautiful day for orienteering on the ‘Suncoast’ area of Florida. Seventeen people (15 entries) two officials and two helpful observers from Sarasota County were at T Mabry Carlton Memorial Reserve for Florida’s first Bike Orienteering and Adventure Duathlon events.

Adventure Duathlon? That is a combination of orienteering on foot and orienteering on a mountain bike. I’m not sure if one has ever been held anywhere before but it seemed popular with our field as 2/3 of our total entries were in the ‘Ad Du’.

Entries came from Naples to Lake Placid to Port Richey in Florida as well as Paul Regan flying in from New Jersey for the event. Luckily Regan was able to combine a business conference in Sarasota with his orienteering. A number of other entries came via the popular Sarasota County Off -Road Riders (SCORR).

Results? The Bike-Orienteering was termed the Suncoast Championships. James Nici of Naples claimed the best time in the Bike-O with a time of 1:39:15 for the 20 km course, also claiming the Masters (45+) title. Nick Makris of Port Richey finished in 1:39:26, an eleven second difference. David Shurman placed third, five minutes back. Don Hall of Bradenton placed second in the men’s Masters’ category.

The trio of Mindy Smith, Carey Smith and Nancy Petschi were declared co-winners of the Women’s Elite Bike-O title.

Tracy Acuff won the Women’s Masters’ title for the Bike-O completing the 10 km course in a very good 76 minutes.

Results for the Adventure Duathlon changed a bit from the Bike-O with Makris taking first overall and Shurman second. Shurman had the fasted time for the 60-point Score-O.

Teams? How did they do? Other than the Smith/Petschi trio, they did not do so well. It seems that having someone to talk with can lead you to miss an important intersection. It seems also that an abundance of local knowledge can lead to pre-conceived notions of where a control flag is located. The Neri/Jones and Hensi/Pogorelski twosomes took long detours while SCORR members Perkins and Falk-Peterson missed a control that was off the regular bike route while punching a control not on their course. Too bad because they had an otherwise great first time orienteering.

Thank you very much to my wife, Lise, for her help with the registration and timing, James Nici and Tracy Acuff for their help with control pick up and to Brie Ondercin of Sarasota County Parks and Recreation for not only coming to observe the event but also pitching in to stuff maps in cases and carry equipment.
